Captivating Mexico City

Writer's picture: Greer RansomGreer Ransom

Mexico City is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. This is something you can see as you are flying into the airport. It is full of life and culture. Walking up and don the streets you will soo people selling a multitude of things, people playing music, street performers and just overall all the happening of a bustling city. The car, bike, scooter, foot traffic is absolutely chaotic but works seamlessly. Mexico city has tons of fireworks going off and clubs going on until 6am. This city truly never sleeps so if you want sleep make sure your accommodation has sound proofing.

TOP THINGS TO CHECK OUT

I am always one who loves to walk around the city and see all the interesting things the town has to offer, so our first day was spent walking around Mexicos massive town square. Mexico City has many squares with tons of activities gong on but Plaza de la Constitution is the main Town Square. We were there right before Christmas and they were turning it from a huge concert stage to an ice skating rink. Here you will find The National Palace, The Metropolitan Cathedral, Templo Mayor, Museo Estanquillo, Plaza Constitucion and tons of pars and restaurants. On the Corner is the House of tiles which is a street lined with buildings with beautiful tile work. The last place in the city I highly recommend visiting is Alamada central. Which is a beautiful public park.

#2 The City Center

he Heart of the city is a great place to visit. All along the Av. P de La Reforma there are several monuments to check out. On that list is: The Angel of Independence is a beautiful statue of the goddess of victory, symbolizing Mexico's independence. The monument to Cuauhtemoc is dedicated to the last ruler of Mexico. Monumento a Colón or known as the monument to Christopher Columbus representing his discovery of the new world and the building of churches. Lastly the Monument to the Revolution which is dedicated to the Mexican revolution.

#4 The Frida Kahlo Museum

After a good wander of the city its time to book your tickets to the Frida Kahlo Museum. Her story is legendary. Other than being a huge artist revolutionary in Mexico, she battled through the most horrifying life, and you can understand why she was such an incredible artist. It is so worth seeing her home and understanding just how inspirational she had been.

Booking ... You will need to book a couple days in advance, they let in a group of people every 15 -30 mins and you will have to book a specific time of which they are strict with (and usually late). Monday is closed and tuesday-friday tehey are open from 10am-6pm. The official site has the best price for the tickets and the schedule is also on the page too, you can book them here: Museo Firda Kahlo

Allow for atleats 1hr-1.5 we made it in and out in an hour but did not read all of the plaques throughly but if you want to you could spend a good two hours in there.

#5 Xochimilco boat tour

A really fun and very educational event I absolutely LOVED is the Xochimilco boat tours. (meeting point). This town has one of the only rivers left in Mexico city and is full of wooden boats that people have hand created. By far the best tour offered is the dinner and unlimited drinks tour. It is run by a sweet mother and son who take you out, buy tacos for everyone, talk about the history of the city and play drinking games. The games are really fun and interactive so you get to know the others on the tour. The best part is making homemade Micheladas, which is like a Bloody Mary with beer. Book Here: Xochimilco Boat Tour

#6 Voler en Global breakfast balloon tour

My last recommendation is to do the Voler en Global breakfast balloon tour over the city. This tour is the most breathtaking view of the city and is by far one of the most unforgettable experiences. These guys are certified pilots and have a lot of good information about the city that is worth the price itself.

There are so many things to do in Mexico. When planning your trip make sure you are there for 5-7 days minimum and most things you will have to book in advance.
