Xochimilco, located in the southern part of Mexico City, is a vibrant and historic neighborhood known for its beautiful canals and colorful trajineras, which are traditional boats. Spending time in Xochimilco can be a truly unforgettable experience. To make the most of your visit, it's important to plan ahead and know what to expect. Here is a full guide to spending time in Xochimilco, ensuring an enjoyable and fascinating experience.

Trajinera tour through the canals

First and foremost, a visit to Xochimilco is not complete without a ride on a trajinera. These boats can hold up to 20 people and are expertly navigated by local guides who use long wooden poles to push off the canal floor. As you embark on your trajinera journey, be prepared to be surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. The canals are adorned with colorful flowers and ancient chinampas, which are floating gardens used by the Aztecs. Did you know that most of Mexico City was under water until the Aztecs came in and filled it in and built a city? Yes, and the river running through Xochimilco is one of the only waterways they left. There is so much to learn about on these boat tours along with that some will give you dinner, play drinking games with you along the way and teach you how to make the classic Michelada, if a bloody mary and a beer had a spicy baby! This was one of the most fun nights we had in Mexico City laughing and drinking with other couples. Make sure when booking you do the dinner and unlimited drinks. if you want this one of a kind expereince then Book here. These are the nicest, most fun and helpful people ever. One of the tour guides works here so he can pay for school and learn english. With singing dancing drinking this is by far the best boat tour you can find.

Walk through the Local Markets

Don't miss the opportunity to explore the local markets and taste traditional Mexican street food. By the river boat tours there are tons of popup stands and restaurants that offer the best homemade Mexican food from delicious tacos to refreshing aguas frescas, Xochimilco's cuisine is sure to satisfy your taste buds.

The next thing in Xochimilco you need to check out is the Island of dead dolls. A truly creepy almost out of a horror movie scene, the legend goes that a guy named Barrera is said to have either come across a young girl who had drowned in the river and either it was her ghost or he failed to save her from drowning. The next day, Barrera found a doll drifting down the canal and believing it belonged to the girl, he hung the doll from a tree in her memory and to ward off her spirit. But the island is a bunch of old dolls hanging from trees so if you aren't scared of spirits give it a go.

After freaking yourself out with a scary story, definitely go check out Parque Ecológico de Xochimilco. Here, one can explore the lush greenery and diverse wildlife while learning about the ancient history and cultural significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, visitors can enjoy leisure activities such as picnicking, walking along the scenic trails, or even renting a bike to fully appreciate the park's serene atmosphere. A nice and relaxing afternoon. I would even recommend doing this and then taking your boat tour.

Mercado de las Flores

Lastly Check out Mercado de las Flores if you want to have a great time and immerse yourself in a vibrant atmosphere. Located in the heart of the city, this colorful market offers a wide range of activities and experiences for everyone to enjoy. From browsing the beautiful array of flowers to trying delicious local cuisine, there is something for everyone here. As you explore the market, take the time to interact with the friendly vendors, who are always eager to share their knowledge and stories. Whether you're a local or a tourist, Mercado de las Flores is a must-visit destination that guarantees a memorable time.
