Located in the western part of Germany, Köln is a beautiful city with a rich history, vibrant culture and awe-inspiring architecture. Famously known for its Kolsh beer and Lindt chocolate, Köln is a city for sight seeing the most beautiful churches, landmarks, and museums. With so many things to see and do it is important to give yourself some time to see them all. A good three days here will let you see the city go to the museums and eat at some of the most delicious restaurants.
One of the best ways to hit some of the most important sites is to take a riverboat cruise to see the city from a whole different perspective while enjoying a drink or two along the way. Alternatively, head to the Rheinauhafen neighbourhood, where you will find contemporary galleries, trendy cafes and plenty of impressive architecture to admire.
The centerpiece of Cologne is undoubtedly the Kölner Dom. This majestic cathedral is an incredible example of Gothic architecture, and it is one of the most visited landmarks in the country. Whether you are a history buff or an architecture lover, this cathedral is a marvel that you cannot miss. Climb up the cathedral's spiral staircase onto one of the towers, and you will be rewarded with unparalleled views of the city below. The Kölner Dom is also known for housing the relics of the Three Wise Men, attracting thousands of pilgrims each year. Another must-see attraction in Cologne is the Rhine River, which the city straddles. A leisurely stroll along the banks of the Rhine is an excellent way to soak up the city's vibrant atmosphere and to witness all the action.
The Lindt Museum is the perfect place to visit if you are a chocolate lover. At $14 a ticket for adults and kids get in free, you are able to explore the rich history of chocolate, see how its made step by step, and sample from the famous chocolate fondue. A kids dream yes, but for adults it will bring out the kid in you. They also have a Café that overlooks the river and after exploring the Museum its it the perfect place for a coffee and more chocolate.
Lindt Chocolate Museum
The triangle is not really a triangle but a lookout point on one of the tallest building in Köln. Not only are the views from this spot breath-taking they have provided panels where it tells you what building and structures you are looking on to. This is a fantastic way to familiarize you self with so many of the popular structures of Köln. Costing only $10 per person this attraction gives you the best perspective of the city while providing details as to what your seeing so you can truly appreciate it. We used this as a way to start our day trip. We went to the top of the building and made a list of all of the different sights we wanted to see. Having this visual let us make the most efficient itinerary. So our Suggestion is to find this building and plan your day from it.
Look Out From the Triangle
Finally, the Roman-Germanic Museum is also one of the city's top draws. This museum offers a fascinating insight into Cologne's Roman and Germanic past, with its collection of artifacts, including mosaics, stonework, and sculpture. Here you can see a Roman mosaic that dates back to the third century, as well as other impressive relics that span thousands of years of history. The museum offers a great day out for history enthusiasts of all ages and is another highlight of Cologne that is well worth visiting.
These main sites complete your trip on the city. Going to the triangle allows you to see all the important sights in one place with a detailed description. So if you want to save time but no sacrafice experience go to the triangle.
