The Diverse City of Berlin, Germany

At the tail end of our trip to Germany we visited Berlin for two days, We wanted to make a stop here because the vibrant capital of Germany, is a treasure trove of extraordinary sights and attractions that every traveler should explore. The city its self thrives on a much more modern music and art scene and there is a certain diversity amongst people not found in other parts of the country.  


Must See Places....


Brandenburg Gate

Location | Free

One of the most significant attractions in Berlin is the majestic Brandenburg Gate. This iconic landmark, built in the late 18th century, stands as a symbol of peace and freedom. The monumental gate, adorned with its distinctive Doric columns and crowned by a magnificent sculpture, is an excellent spot for tourists to gather and capture beautiful memories. Walking through this historic monument and strolling along the grand Unter den Linden boulevard will take you back in time, imagining the centuries of history that unfolded in this very spot.


Checkpoint Charlie

For a deeper understanding of Berlin's troubled past, Checkpoint Charlie is an essential visit. This memorial site is dedicated to preserving the memory of the Berlin Wall and its significance during the Cold War. The site includes a documentation center, an open-air exhibition, and preserved sections of the wall, offering visitors a glimpse into the division that once separated families and friends. On the wall, are stories of people who tried to cross and a timeline of events throughout the start of the wall to when it was taken down in 1989. You can also see the clear separation of East and West Berlin with the different areas of control. Being near this history is breath taking. For us realizing that we were born when this was still going on connected us to the understanding that our world has come very far but also we are not that far removes from horrible tragedies like this.  Location



The Murdered Jews Memorial

This is a powerful and emotional tribute to the millions of Jewish people who tragically lost their lives during the Holocaust. Located in the heart of the city, the memorial consists of 2,711 concrete slabs, different in size and height, creating a maze-like structure that makes you feel both overwhelmed and isolated. The design of the memorial allows visitors to walk through the rows of slabs, symbolizing the chaos and confusion suffered by the victims. It serves as a reminder of the horrors of the past and the importance of remembering and learning from the dark chapters of history. Visiting this memorial leaves a lasting impact on anyone who witnesses it, emphasizing the importance of compassion, tolerance, and the fight against injustice.


East Gallery Wall

Another section of the wall that is a must visit is the East Gallery Wall. It was a significant historical landmark that divided East and West Berlin during the Cold War. It was a long wall covered in colorful graffiti and murals, expressing political messages and individual artistic expressions. The wall stood as a symbol of the divided city and the tensions between the capitalist West and the communist East. It also represented the desire for freedom and reunification among the people of Berlin. It was not just a physical barrier, but also a space for creativity and protest against the oppressive communist regime. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked the end of an era of political division and suppression, and the East Gallery Wall stands today as a reminder of the struggle for freedom and unity.


The Stasi Museum

A research and memorial centre concerning the political system of the former East Germany. It is located in the Lichtenberg locality of Berlin, in the former headquarters. It is an intriguing place that allows visitors to explore the dark and secretive history of East Germany. It focuses on the activities of the Stasi, the secret police of the former German Democratic Republic. The museum provides a comprehensive overview of the methods and techniques used by the Stasi to surveil and control their own citizens. From hidden cameras and wiretapping devices to personal stories of individuals who experienced the oppressive regime, the Museum Stasi offers a chilling insight into a time that seems both distant and uncomfortably close.


Museum Island

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a haven for culture enthusiasts. Located in the heart of Berlin, this complex houses five world-renowned museums. One of the highlights is the Pergamon Museum, which showcases ancient artifacts such as the awe-inspiring Pergamon Altar and the famous Ishtar Gate of Babylon. The Neues Museum is also a must-see, housing the exquisite bust of Nefertiti and a collection of Egyptian and prehistoric artifacts. Museum Island offers an unparalleled opportunity to dive into history and explore different cultures under one roof.


Mercedes Benz/UBER arena

And Finally if you are a sports fan, you have to check out the new Mercedes Benz stadium they built in East Berlin. They have Music, sports, you name it here. Outside is full of amazing restaurants and a massive mall. We loved the atmosphere and all the activities going on around this stadium!
